Capping off the season in world class style
A Review of Oktober Fest-Märzen by Ayinger Brewery

As the Oktoberfest season drew to a close, I had only one regret. I was sadly unable to find the Oktober Fest-Märzen beer from one of my favorite breweries, Ayinger out of Germany. It seemed unfair that my co-founder was able to locate this fine nectar (and give it a perfect score) while I scoured my local scene only to come up empty. But while out of town for Thankgiving, that magical phrase ''beer run'' was uttered and we were off to the local beer store. I walked through the front doors and there it was: the last case of Ayinger Oktober Fest-Märzen staring at me like a damsel in distress. Many damsels as a matter of fact, and I rescued quite a few of them. The Oktoberfest season may be over, but my stomach said, ''Nay! I shall enjoy one more!''

In the glass, this beer has a rich golden coloration that closely resembles a luscious honey. The aroma consists of a thick sweet malty character that is laced with caramel and sits atop a warm spiced bread. As Oktoberfest brews go, I can't think of a better introduction. It's one of those beers you step away from, grin from ear to ear, then let out a small chuckle because you know you're about to taste one hell of an amazing brew.

That first sip transported me to a whimsical German beer garden where I frolicked among the beer maids and lederhosen. All those spicy breads take center stage on the front end and are accented by a bouquet of herbs. The middle ground quickly transforms into a smooth malty character with a savory caramel leading the charge. Rounding out the flavor train is a warm hop profile that exits crisp and clean, leaving only a kiss of sweet malt for an aftertaste. The mouthfeel is incredibly smooth from start to finish.

Overall, Ayinger's Oktober Fest-Märzen is an exquisite beer and is a perfect example of the oktoberfest style. It is hands down one of the best, if not the best, oktoberfest brews I have ever experienced. I can't be happier that I was able to find this beer and officially cap off my Oktoberfest season with it. I highly recommend this beer to any and all levels of beer drinker. Seasoned beer fans will find the Oktober Fest-Märzen to be simply extraordinary. Novices will find it to be mind blowing and transformational. I guarantee that you will never see lagers the same way again.

Once again, Ayinger has completely blown me away with a world class creation. I keep thinking that one day I will come across an Ayinger brew that doesn't immediately result in my eyes rolling into the back of my head as my brain slips into a beer bliss coma. Haven't found one yet and I hope I never do. Like I've said before, if Ayinger is on the label, it's going home with me.
