When you need a good dose of nostalgia
A Review of Old Well White by Top of the Hill Brewery

The brewpub is one of the best places for novices to educated themselves on craft beer. Perusing the isles of a beer store can get pretty daunting, especially for someone with little knowledge of the product. All it takes is one misstep, one bad purchase, and the journey can be tainted. This is where brewpubs come into play. They offer an array of beers, usually baseline versions of popular styles, and compliment them with food options. One such brewpub in my area goes by the name Top of the Hill. It is a very popular establishment situated in the heart of Chapel Hill, NC. It's also a stone's throw away from UNC campus, making it a fantastic set of craft beer training wheels for students. One such training beer is their Old Well White Ale.

In the glass, this beer has a hazy orange color with a lemony yellow tint. It comes with a frothy white head that has decent retention. On the nose, I found that signature orange citrus aroma along with an herbal touch. The flavor is pretty standard for a good wheat beer, just an orange citrus with a slight bready undertone. This beer is brewed with orange peel and coriander, both of which are easily discernible. The hop profile is quite mild and only adds a slight tang to the finish. The mouthfeel is very smooth and easy drinking, making this a highly accessible brew.

Overall, Top of the Hill's Old Well White Ale is a tasty brew with laid back personality. It's a great session beer to enjoy during a UNC game. There's not much complexity to it, but that's kind of the point. It's a tasty bridge beer, one used to usher newbie palates into the lands of better beer. Every craft beer fan has a list of ''aha'' hand-holding brews that they fondly remember. I would imagine that the Old Well White Ale is referenced as such by many former UNC students. It's a comfort beer, one to embrace after a long weekend of studying, or one to come back to when you need a good dose of nostalgia.
