When you need more peace than cheer
A Review of Christmas Eve at a New York City Hotel Room by Evil Twin Brewing

Oh the weather outside is frightful, and the beer is so delightful. And since we've got no place to go... let's drink! It's that time of year once again. And while frantic shoppers continue to make asses of themselves, I opted for a more civilized approach to my holiday season. Beer fans love this time of year because it is chock full of spicy winter warmers and big savory stouts. Some beers just have the power to put you in a good mood, and one such brew for me this season was the Christmas Eve At A New York City Hotel Room, an Imperial Stout. Yes, that's the actual beer name. I'll give you three guesses as to the brewer, but you'll only need one. Yes, it's another delectably hilarious Evil Twin creation.

In the glass, this beer has a jet black coloration with no edging. It comes with a creamy coppery tan head that has really nice retention. On the nose, I was greeted by a strong coffee-like roasted malt profile and savory dark chocolates. There is also a slight alcohol sweetness swirling around. That was pretty much it, just a straight up Imperial Stout minus any unnecessary tinsel. I could finally sit back in peace and enjoy what I can only assume is a damn fine beer.

All it took was one sip to fully understand this beer's name. I can almost hear Jeppe saying, ''I know it's Christmas. That doesn't mean I'm throwing peppermint in my damn stout.'' This is just a solid Imperial Stout and nothing else. The beer has a dominant charred roasted malt flavor along with strong notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and cocoa. I also found a slight smokey character and a hint of licorice. The beer has a solid medium body and drinks very smooth for the style. The hop profile is mildly aggressive, giving the beer a unobtrusive bitterness. The beer finishes somewhat dry and exits with a pleasant roasted chocolaty aftertaste.

Overall, Evil Twin's Christmas Eve At A New York City Hotel Room is a solid and reliable Imperial Stout that I can easily recommend to most beer fans. It's potent enough to issue a warning to novices, but accessible enough to warrant the good college try. I wouldn't say this is a beer for grinches, but it certainly departs from the overwhelming glut of holiday themed brews. It's a breath of fresh air in an overly commercialized world. Personally, I'm one of those people who is content opting out of the season. I don't like shopping. I don't like seasonal decor. I don't like holiday parties. What I do like is good beer. So wherever I find myself on Christmas Eve, be it at home with family or in a NYC hotel room, I now have a trusty companion that is guaranteed to lighten my mood.
