It's not enough to brew great beer in today's craft beer culture. You need something more, something fresh, something innovative. This is why you see so many hybrid brews on the market these days. It's an ''anything goes'' environment that often spawns some seriously questionable beverages. The beer world may or may not need a Triple Chocolate Bacon Espresso Stout, but it still embodies the adventurous spirit of craft beer. In a world that seems completely unhinged at times, it's often wise to tackle one specific idea. Take Marble Brewery's Double White Ale for instance. The Belgian Witbier is a very popular beer style due to its light, flavorful, and refreshing nature. Marble asked the simple question, ''What if we make it stronger?'' Yes, an Imperial Witbier. Well played my friends, you officially have my attention.

In the glass, this beer had a thick and hazy yellow-orange coloration. It came with a frothy white head that had good retention. Wits are generally known for their big fluffy heads, and I imagine the strength of this one really toned it down. The head was much more tame, similar to that of a standard pale ale. On the nose, I was greeted with an amplified burst of classic Witbier traits, namely banana bread, orange peel, and coriander. I also found some herbal, citrus, and peppery notes swirling around. It was definitely a beast for the style, so it had a lock on my curiosity going in for that first sip.

Wow, talk about a palate punch of flavor. All of the aromatic notes translated nicely into flavor notes, so there were no unexpected surprises. It was just the intensity that captured my attention. Big sweet banana bread, tangy bitter orange peel, savory punch of coriander, and blasts of herbs, citrus, and sweet peppers. The beer had a solid medium body, which was noticeably thinker for the style, and drank very smooth. The alcohol nip was certainly noticeable, but not distracting. The beer finished somewhat sticky and exited with big banana bread aftertaste.

Overall, Marble Brewery's Double White Ale is a delightful brew with a big flavor punch. Due to its high accessibility, it's one of the very few stronger brews that I can recommend to any and all beer fans. Seasoned drinkers will love this beer's amplified personality. Novices can especially benefit from this beer's elevated intensity. It's a familiar face on a big beefy body. I am very happy that Marble had the wisdom to maintain stylistic integrity. Far too often brewers will lose a beer's character in a quest for strength. Marble did it right, and I tip my drinking hat to them in appreciation.

This was the beer that ended my visit to Albuquerque, New Mexico and I could think of no better adios. At that point I had explored the city and learned that Albuquerque knows craft beer. But, it was the Marble Double White that highlighted the city's adventurous spirit and I greatly look forward to a return visit. Cheers!
