Exquisite
As you get to know me through this website, one thing will become abundantly clear: I'm a bock man. I love my bocks, especially the big bold doppelbocks. Unfortunately that means I pay a premium for my favorite style of beer. For quite some time now I've been on a personal quest to find a great American bock. I haven't found one yet, but I'm come really close on several occasions. But the fact of the matter is, the best that the US has to offer in this category just doesn't compare to the average German bock.

Celebrator from the Ayinger Brewery in Germany is my go-to doppelbock. When I crave a doppelbock, this is the beer that immediately comes to mind. They are easy to spot due to the little plastic rams dangling from each bottle (''bock'' means ''ram'' in German). It looks like a cheap gimmick, but once you experience the beer, you immediately realize that the folks at Ayinger can pretty much do what they want. ''We have conquered the art of brewing, so what else can we do? I'm thinking little plastic goat bottle decorations.'' Why? Because they can.

Ayinger has mastered all the great things that make doppelbocks delectable. This brew has a deep dark brown coloration without being totally opaque. The aroma is thick and sweet with notes of dark chocolate and caramel. The mouthfeel is velvety and smooth as silk. Bocks are notoriously complex when it comes to flavor (which is probably why I like them so much). With the Celebrator, I taste sweet caramel, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and rich coffee. The front end is quite savory and the back end slowly dissipates much like a cup of coffee would. The malty aftertaste stays with you for a really long time. But trust me, that's definitely a good thing.

Overall, Ayinger's Celebrator doppelbock is an exquisite brew with a delicious character. I can think of no greater doppelbock on the market and I would have to personally venture into the heart of Bavaria to find its equal. I can easily recommend this brew to any and all beer fans, so definitely snag a pack when you see them. The richness and complexity will wow seasoned drinkers while the silky smooth mouthfeel will sweep novices off their feet. One thing is for certain: Celebrator will forever change the way you look at beer.
