Chief Chat  »  The unenviable decision

My guess is that if you are a better beer drinker, you have undoubtedly faced the following scenario: You are at a social gathering with friends. You look in the fridge or cooler and a feeling of disgust comes over you as you realize that the only thing looking back at you is the dreaded garbage beer stockpile. Admit it. Your stomach just turned a little as the memories started rushing back. No worries though. We all feel a shared pain. My main reason for bringing this up is to ask the question "What then?"

I mean think about it. Whats the proper plan of action? You are suddenly faced with a decision that could not only affect your once perceived awesome evening with friends, but also the way people might view you in the future. Do you throw a tantrum as you loudly proclaim "What the hell? Who decided to get nothing but toilet swill for beer?", and automatically become the full embodiment of the stereotypical beer snob? Perhaps you just politely decline any drinking for the evening and try to make the best of things? Do you take one for the team and just force a few down like bad cough medicine? Or do you just start bringing your own brews to every social gathering simply to avoid even running the slightest chance of being faced with this unthinkable occurence?

I dont know if there even is a right or wrong answer here, but I would love to hear from others on the topic. And if you feel like sharing a story or two in the process, we would all be more than happy to relish in some of your past suffering.

Ugh, you and I have been in this situation SO many times. It's especially hard getting blindsided with toilet water beers after you have had enough time to hone your craft beer palate. What was once a tolerable inconvenience has become total taste bud torture. It really is hard to convey that and not to look like an elitist prick, even with a coherent explanation. You can't say that you prefer better beer without instantly insulting everyone at the party. On the flip side, you don't want to subject yourself to a terrible evening of drinking just to avoid the confrontation. It's quite the pickle for a craft beer fan.

What I have started to do is bring a six pack of canned craft beer to any social event I attend, no matter what. I bought a little six pack cooler specifically for this reason because it's discrete and easy to stash in the car. That way I can always fall back on the "thanks, but I forgot I brought my own" line when you find yourself in that most unfortunate of situations. Plus you can leave them in the car without being plundered and just return for a can whenever you need one. As an added bonus, cans are more visually acceptable at a crap beer party and may lead to some craft conversions.

On that note, my favorite "Craft Beer Rescue Kit" includes two Oskar Blues G'Knight Imperial Reds, two Brooklyn East IPAs, and two Triangle Golden Belgian Ales (a local treat). That way I have a nice variety of style and strength to get me through the evening. Works like a charm.

I think you have the best solution. It is discrete, yet easily accessible in an emergency. And six is just enough that you can share one, and still have more than enough to get you through the evening, especially in your case with the 2 G'Knight Imperial Reds.

And on that note, now I am pondering what my emergency kit would be made up of. Hmmmmm...Maybe two Oskar Blues Deviant Dales, two 21st Amendment Monks Blood, and lets face it, how can I leave out two Oskar Blues Ten FIDY's?

Hmm, that would actually be a really cool discussion thread: "Fill Your Craft Beer Rescue Kit". To be honest, I'm surprised your kit didn't include six Oskar Blues Ten FIDY's with an additional two in the glove box.
