Here we have number 13 in Terrapin's side project series. Big Daddy Vlady is a russian imperial stout that pours dark and thick with little head. Your nose will be teased with a lot of chocolate but at 10.5% your body will feel the burn. With the smell you would think that it would be easy to drink. But after one taste you soon notice that the alcohol is a smidge (Yes, I said smidge.) over powering thus making this beer a ''sipper''. It has a alcohol taste but settles with a hint of roasted malt. It finishes with a hint of roasted malts.
You will see on the label it says ''serve in a shot glass'' right on the label. That should tell you something about this beer. Also, look at the picture of the sinister looking man. Terrapin does a great job with their labels and they nailed this one for sure.
As I said, I would not recommend BDV to the novice beer drinker. However, if you're a novice and want to try a big boy beer, then by all means jump right in. I like this beer a lot but would not knock people over to get another but if someone had one to share on a cold winters night then I wouldn't hesitate filling up my shot glass.

Serve in a shot glass. Wow, that is one intimidating statement. Now I have to try this beer just to see what the Terrapin brewers view as a monster brew. Any comparable you can think of or is it pretty unique?

I remember when I had one of these, I tried to be manly and blast through it and show it who was boss. I survived the battle, but may never be the same after it. I could see it as a good 2-3oz sipper though. Maybe I should read the instructions on the bottles a little more carefully. Actually, just the fact that there are instructions on beer these days makes me smile.
