If I were to mention the name Dogfish Head, I'm pretty sure I could predict several of the thoughts that would cross your mind. Things like mind blowingly delicious brews, style stretching and boundary pushing creativity, and palate pleasures beyond your wildest dreams would probably be at the top of the list, and rightfully so. To say that they have earned a reputation fitting of all of those ideas plus several more would be an understatement. But what about the idea of sessionable, or beer for beginners, or a one size fits all kind of brew? Kind of an odd concept to associate with them, right? Well before you answer, allow me to introduce you to the 60 Minute IPA.
In the glass, 60 Minute IPA has a golden coloration that has just a bit of an orange tint to it. It's crystal clear, and comes with a frothy bright white head that has plenty of staying and lacing power. When you get your nose in close to the glass, something very interesting happens. You find yourself actually being allowed to dissect an IPA without having your nostrils blown clear through the back of your skull. Notes of lemongrass, light pine resin, grapefruit, and over ripe mango are easily identified right off the bat. Give it a few minutes to settle and warm, and a malty layer of toasted whole grain bread starts to come through.
When you go in for the first taste of it, the mouthfeel catches you before you know whats happened. There is an oddly remarkable combination of both oily slick and sticky that throws your senses for a bit of a loop initially. This is a rare combination that I have personally encountered maybe 4 times before. Be sure to take a moment to enjoy it as it happens. Once you have absorbed that lovely trait, the flavors start to do their magic. The hops have a bit more of a floral kick to them here than they did in the nose, but they still have some good pine and grapefruit qualities as well. They provide a nice tongue tingle from the time you notice them all the way to the last drop. The transition from the hops to the malt layers is effortless and smooth with some sweet caramel making itself known. If you can imagine a bit of pepper sprinkled on top of it, you can really get a feel for what the last half of each sip tastes like.
The real beauty in the 60 Minute IPA is its rather simple and direct demeanor. It isn't out to bash your brains in with a spiked hops bat. Dogfish Head knows that you can't beat someone into loyalty. They realize that all it takes is one bad experience and you may have lost a drinker forever, especially a new one with a still delicate palate. Thanks to the 60 Minute IPA, they have the perfect way to welcome those new to the better beer world. Here you have the perfect example of an amazing bridge beer for those new to the game. All of the flavors are spot on, and even a newbie could put back 4 or 5 of them with little hesitation. That also makes it a great session brew for those with a little more experience under their belts. Being what we call a ''no-thinker drinker'' is never a bad thing, and the fact that a trusted and well respected brewery like Dogfish Head has their name on the side of one makes it all the better. So if you see it, feel free to engage. This 60 Minute IPA welcomes all with open arms.

I put Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA in the same league as the Samuel Adams Boston Lager in terms of its lasting impact on the craft brew world. Infinitely accessible and always tasty no matter where you are in your better beer journey. I also love that the 60 Minute IPA has infiltrated most of the big grocery store chains at this point. Like you said, it's the perfect hand-holding beer for anyone wanting to get their craft beer feet wet.

That is a good way of looking at it. Another that keeps popping into my mind is to think of it the Samuel Adams Boston Lager and the Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA as "one beer fits all" beers. If you can't at least appreciate or enjoy them, odds are you need to switch to some wine spritzers.

I completely agree on all counts. 60 Minute is an awesome intro beer and is one of the few with staying power. If a craft beer noob discovers the 60 Minute and never moves from that spot, you can't fault them one bit. But, hopefully they will be curious enough to step up to the 90 Minute one day. :)
